Morena (MP), Dec 23 (PTI) Curfew was lifted from the riot-torn city today, where 27 persons were injured in incidents of arson, stone pelting and shooting during clashes between dalits and upper community members over killing of former state BSP Chief P P Choudhary and his son Hitendra.
"The curfew was lifted this morning as the situation was peaceful and road traffic was restored", Inspector General of Police, Sanjay Rana told reporters here.
About 17 persons were arrested for yesterday's incidents of arson, stone pelting and firing, he said adding "prohibitory orders under section 144 were still in force in Morena and neighbouring Jaura tehsil as a precautionary measure".
Police have also arrested eight of the 13 accused of gunning down Choudhary and his son on December 21, he added.
Meanwhile, District Collector Amit Rathore ordered a magisterial probe into the entire episode and met dalit community members and BSP leaders, including its state president Bhujbal Ahirwar, to defuse the situation, sources said.
During the meeting, protestors demanded 20 gun licences in Choudhary's village Ramchandra Ka Pura and a compensation of Rs one lakh each to families of Choudhary and his son Hitendra, besides seeking government job for one of their family members.
Agreeing to perform final rites of the deceased, they also demanded cases be registered against those named by Choudhary in his earlier complaints alleging attack on him. PTI
